I made up a holiday celebrating Wittgenstein chasing Karl Popper with a fireplace poker.

How is it celebrated - reenaction?

I've always been tremendously fond of Mount Holyoke College's Mountain Day. By tradition and necessity, Mountain Day has no fixed date, but is declared on the spot by whatever authority is charged with the decision. Whenever it falls, it is a day of brilliant autumn weather, too beautiful to be spent in ordinary indoor pursuits. On Mountain Day all classes and labs are cancelled, any deadlines rolled over to the next day, and everyone is released to go climb a pint-sized New England mountain or pick apples or whatever. (I think, but am not sure, that the general holiday extends to virtually all staff as well.)

I'd totally put Mountain Day on a national holiday list. For that matter, I'd add Ice Day for a perfect winter day, Flower Day for a perfect day in Spring, and perhaps Meteor Night for summer.

We already did! It's called Aveomas, and it's a semi-absurdist take on the whole winter-holidays thing. It celebrates not having been eaten by Giant Birds in the past year / hoping not to get eaten by Giant Birds in the coming year, and is set about two weeks into January so that you can take advantage of all the post-Christmas and New Years sales.

I'm also fond of No Steps Day, commemorating the day I walked all the way up to the top of St Paul's Cathedral and then all over London after an overnight flight by not walking up any steps at all.

Other made-up holidays: No Pants Day, Talk Like A Pirate Day, dozens of food-specific holidays, Jude's Day of 200 Pigs...
