Things that I Love:

Getting a standing ovation from a class at the end of the term

The end of the term, because, gods help me, even when you love what you do, sometimes you need a break.

Things that I Hate:

The grading that's lying in wait for me

Not feeling like I have enough time to do everything

The word "emasculated."

The link - should you choose to accept it! - will take you to a Defamer article about how Katherine Heigl declined an Emmy nomination because she didn't feel that the material she'd had to work with this year was Emmy-worthy.  How much do I love this woman?  For a long time, I rather hated her, because I was conflating her with her pink-clad, identifying-with-patients, all-the-worst-parts-of-stereotypical-femininity, baking, gossiping, cheating, bad-doctor character on "Grey's Anatomy."  And then I noticed that she's ... well, awesome, because she actually notices and speaks out about things that most Hollywood stars don't really so much as bat their eyelashes at: bigotry, misogyny, and, yes, stupidity, because, while it's still my guilty pleasure, the pleasure has gotten a lot guiltier as the writing has gotten worse.  Yet, for some reason, Defamer chooses to describe her in terms of how she emasculates her husband.  I mean, seriously, it's a tag, The Emasculation of Joshua.  For multiple posts.  On things like, say, her husband praising her for having forced him to do something about his ADD.  I have to admit, I haven't got the faintest clue who her husband is ... which may be a part of the problem, since he seems like a charming fellow who loves his successful wife.  Does Defamer love that?  Hell to the no!  Seriously, does Isiah Washington work for them?

I have met a few guys who've used the word "emasculated" in real life: one and all, they've had serious inferiority complexes, and the idea of a girl - a girl! - beating them is kind of the final straw.  They know they're not as good as the other guys, but for a girl - a girl! - to outdo them, well, now, that's just unacceptable.  It's like the last bastion of sexist double-speak.  Well, that and ____.*  Whereas, real men?  Have enough masculinity/identity/confidence to spare, and enough brains to know it.  To quote ... well, a conversation between me and the 'Gnu, though I'm damned if I can remember which one of us said it: anybody who's that easily emasculated obviously didn't have too much to begin with.  So, salud, Josh Kelly, and all the other guys out there who have the confidence in their own achievements to be proud of their loved ones.  Even when the loved one is - a girl!

* Fill in the blank yourself, since we both know that it's not the "last" bastion at all, but one of many: in fact, comment game!  What are some of the other ones you've noticed?
