d_aulnoyWhen one is delirious with fever? Perhaps one shouldn't handle fragile objects. Because one might be prone to droppage. And, should that fragile object be a thermometer, one might have to focus one's fever-bright eyes on minescule grains of mercury, and try them collect it with shaking hands.
Yep, it was the Great Thermometer Disaster of, um, Yesterday, otherwise known as Fun With Poisonous Substances! Picture me, trying to manhandle the thermometer back into its housing, watching it spin through the air in that "Brain Overheating, Flying Glass *Pretty*" sort of way, putting a hand out to catch it just ... a... little... too... late... and then sitting there for a moment going, "Huh ... wonder how to handle that?" First step was getting the cat (the cat who jest lurves shiney things) out of the room before she mutated into some sort of a feline Reed Richards. Next step was, slowly, realizing that I couldn't actually *pick it up,* not unless I wanted to deal with something a whole heckuva lot worse than strep ... Luckily, being a jeweler, I actually had some mercury appropriate tweezers to roll it into a giant glob of liquid brain damage. It then went onto a piece of paper, which then went into the toilet.
Did you know that mercury won't flush?
On a side note, today my throat hurts so much that talking makes me cry. Just thought I'd share.
