Obvious Child
Oct. 2nd, 2009 12:53 pmGillian Robespierre produced and directed a short film about abortion, "Obvious Child," and put it online gratis.
Here's the thing: it's a romantic comedy, highly unusual in a time when movies about unwanted pregnancy always, always, always end with the woman bearing the child and the whole scenario bringing her tremendous, unexpected, somewhat unrealistic happiness ("Knocked Up," I'm looking at you. And sit down, "Juno," I see you waving your hands in the air all crazy). It's highly reminiscent of early Kevin Smith, if Kevin Smith did hipsters instead of stoners - wry, intelligent dialogue, if somewhat affected, with constant references to things that probably won't shock most of the intended audience, but that sure as hell wouldn't play well in stereotypical middle America - fisting! farting! unapologetic fucking!
It's 20 minutes, and cutely thought-provoking - enjoy, if you have some time to kill.
