The Graveyard Book is very much a Neil Gaiman book, which is to say, it has absolutely nothing in common with the rest of his oevre aside from being wonderful.
It is also clearly and obviously what he would have done and wanted to do and was unable to do in Books of Magic, pared and polished and perfected: there are so many echoes that it fair makes a girl's head spin, and it really helps to clarify each work in and of itself to have read the other.
Lovely.
