Unscientific poll: when you hear the name "Foucault," which one do you think of?

A) Michel, the philosopher-critic.

B) Leon, the physicist.

C) Jeffrey, the singer-songwriter.

D) Annick, the dominatrix.

(Also?  I am immensely amused that Annick Foucault's personal philosophy of liberated sexuality is inspired by none other than ... Gilles Deleuze.)

Michel first, then Jeffrey. much love for both!

I have some sort of constitutional issue managing to pronounce Jeffrey's last name correctly and always substitute the pronunciation of Michel's.

So I guess A, except when C.

me too! although I've heard how J pronounces it, my mind blanks it out, and M's pronunciation comes up instead.

Wait ... so what *is* the alternate pronunciation?

Because all of the things popping into *my* head seem ... dirty.

*laughs* the time I heard it (said by Peter Mulvey), it sounded like "Foe - colt" (he was referencing "the Foucault family haircut *g*).

as for Michel Foucault, I've read only a little of his work, so perhaps if I waded through masses of it I'd be bothered.

All I can remember it is that it actually ends in a t sound. So, when I start with one pronunciation and finish with the other, it's not pretty.

Michel; I think I may have heard of Leon, but not the other two.

I think of Michael, but now I am intensely curious about Annick.

Michel. I had no idea any of the others existed.

Let me clarify: I think of Michel, and then I rush to expunge the thought from my brain, because his writing irriates me so.

Hee. With you on that one ....

Me too neither. (By which I mean I think of Michel because I haven't heard of the others.)

But I kind of like Michel--or at least the little of him I've read (and the even less of him I thought I understood). It was a long time ago, and I was under the philosophical influence of the Evil Ex, so this may be just an illusion.

A, since I had never heard of the others.

B, primarily because of Umberto Eco, followed closely by A.

I think of A & do a small inner jig because I'm not applying his theory to anything at the moment (and probably will never have to do so again).

A. I don't think I've ever heard of any of the others. I fail at life!

Michel!

(And I always think of the Gogol Bordello lyrics, "I know it all from Diogenes, to the Foucault / from Lozhechkin to Passpartu")

Except who the hell is Lozhechkin?
