Fine cigars.

But, seriously - I really, really love that moment of "Eureka!" that comes after sufficient head-butting: someone in something I recently read or watched (shamefully, I believe it to be "Studio 60") referred to it as the ubiquitous 4-in-the-morning-miracle.

Well, it's not 4 in the morning, but I finally have a shape for my last chapter that I'm happy with.

Eureka!

Maybe later, I'll allow myself to enjoy a fine cigar.

Why shamefully? I have no problem admitting I watch that. Not as good as Sorkin's previous stuff, it's true, but it doesn't have to be to beat most of what's out there.

Yes, it was Studio 60 that had the 4-in-the-morning thing.

I loved the first few episodes deeply and truly ... and then they lost the decent comedy bits and the political commentary in favor of the religious debates and the bizarrely sexist plotlines, and something inside me went "Urk". And yet, I continue to watch it because it's the first thing that I can remember Matthew Perry or Amanda Peet being good in since, well, ever, and I've always had a strange soft soft for the both of them ....

How interesting. Most people I've talked to liked the first few episodes the least, not the most, and I have to admit Sorkin seemed a little uneven while he got accustomed to writing in an area where sketch comedy is the expectation and not frosting he gets to put on the drama.

He's also kind of at a disadvantage in having only one long-standing relationship (Matt and Danny) to work with, while in Sports Night and The West Wing he jumped right into the middle, and so had several.

What do you think of the cancellation talk?

It having just occurred to me that you may have never actually seen the two "Kitty's Fairy Tale" issues of the X-Men in years gone by and that they are right up your alley, it's also occurred to me that My Agent will be at the same conference you'll be at in about two weeks.

I'm sending a package along for you, with my highest regards.

Much love,
Pappy
