Oh, I agree with you, and I think that's a perfectly feasible system (without having bothered to outline a philosophy, I think that's what I do, fer sure, and sort of assumed most people did: have your quality basics, and then succumb to the micro/maxi/Mucha-skirt that's all the craze if and when the spirit takes you).

What I find interesting here is the re-interpretation of that "French" style as consisting entirely of the basics and nothing but the basics, but of the finest quality, and in conjunction with this minimalist drive, which strikes me as a retread of the 70s movement against conspicuous consumption. It intrigues me, both because it makes an odd construct of French identity that doesn't seem to be based in actual *France,* and because it's such a 180 from the "typical" American mentality ....
