Manna from Heaven
Sep. 12th, 2009 06:16 pmOtherwise known as sushi pizza.
No, wait, hear me out.
I'm not normally a tremendously adventurous eater. I will occasionally try weird things, just because ... who can pass up the opportunity to eat cheese curd sushi? But I usually regret it. So today, when we passed a sushi place in Chinatown and I dove for the pictured-in-the-window sushi pizza, I didn't have high expectations. They weren't really improved when I asked the waitress what sushi pizza was and she looked at me blankly and said, "It's, you know. Pizza. With sushi. You can have tuna or salmon?"
What sushi pizza is? Is delicious.
It was a pie of some kind of very thin flatbread, topped with mild wasabi in place of tomato sauce, layered with very finely sliced tuna, almost like tuna tartare, and topped with some spicy sauce criss-crossing some sweet sauce, finished with roe. It was wonderful.
Mikata, at 150 Centre Street. You heard it here first ....
