Yes, walking distance, which is nice. But many of the other fac commute from far away, so it's not like I'm in a social hotspot or anything (in fact, this summer has been an exercise in living in a ghost town).
As for shuttles and such, unfortunately not, not from this far up, at least. There are commuter buses which only run during commuter hours, etc. There's been talk of commuter rail, but that's the kind of thing that /might/ happen in /decades/.
Anyway, good to be where I am. The main problem consists in not knowing anybody, which would be the same pretty much wherever I lived, although being more southerly would make it easier to rectify.
