In Marina Warner's From the Beast to the Blonde,  she says

"Carter also noted the hypocritical evasions of so many modern versions of 'Beauty and the Beast,' commenting caustically that the tale had been increasingly employed 'to house-train the id.'"  

However, because the softcover edition of BtoB sometimes skips citations, I have no source for this, and I really want to know if Carter was talking about the modern versions, or Beaumont's version, or Beaumont in general, or ...?  and the internet is of no use: of the only two hits, one paraphrases Warner quoting Carter, and one contradicts her.  Sigh.

I'm betting the sentiment is from The Virago Book of Fairy Tales, but I don't recognize the exact phrasing - any thoughts?
